Branden, tell us a bit more about yourself. Where does your desire to be a director come from?
My desire to be a director came from just constantly creating. The more action projects I made, the more confidence I built and it eventually clicked like, “Yeah… I can really do this.” I’ve always been an artist with a vision.
What is your background?
I come from a stunt background fighting, taking hits, doing wrecks. I got my start working on Avengers: Infinity War, Endgame, and Black Panther in Atlanta, GA.
What were your references for Blade Echo?
My references are wide, but the core is The Matrix, Star Wars, anime, and Power Rangers. All that 90s influence just that cool, stylish energy that shaped me.
You won Best Action at the Red Movie Awards—what does that mean to you?
It means everything. It shows that the hard work and dedication didn’t go unnoticed. It also reminds me that I’m a visionary and that I’m on the right path.
Your work combines martial arts choreography, anime energy, and cinematic storytelling. How do you balance these elements?
It always starts with an idea. Then I break it down how I want to shoot it, what works, what doesn’t. Once that foundation is there, everything else falls into place.
What makes Blade Echo stand out from other action or superhero series?
Honestly, I didn’t set out thinking about that. This was personal. I just wanted to prove to myself that I could build something from the ground up like how George Lucas did Star Wars or Tolkien did Lord of the Rings.
Derek Castle is described as a wrongfully convicted underdog. Why was this an important starting point?
Because that’s where I feel like I am right now. It’s about proving you belong, proving you have a voice. That underdog energy that’s where every journey starts.
What was the biggest challenge during the shoot?
Time and money every filmmaker deals with that. But especially time… always time (laughs).
Do you have any anecdote to share?
Nothing specific, honestly just the overall experience of bringing it all together was a journey in itself.
What is your next project?
I’ve got a lot in mind, but right now I’m finishing up Static Shock. I shot it last year and I’m currently wrapping up the VFX should be done soon.
